Bauhaus Museum, Berlin

Tham & Videgård is invited by The Senate Department of Urban Development and the Environment (Senatsverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung und Umwelt) to participate in the architectural design competition for the new building of the Bauhaus Archive / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin’s city centre. The new museum is meant to open in 2019 marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of Bauhaus.

The Bauhaus Archive / Museum für Gestaltung will extend its current exhibition site with a new museum building adjacent to the existing building, which itself will be refurbished accordingly to cultural heritage preservation regulations.

After 35 years the historic building of the Bauhaus Archive / Museum für Gestaltung designed by Walter Gropius and founded in 1979 is now too small for the world’s largest and most comprehensive Bauhaus collection and does no longer meet the modern technical requirements for museums and archives.

The new building extension has a gross floor area of approximately 6.800 sqm will be located on the western part of the museum site between the canal (Landwehrkanal) and the bounding street Klingelhöferstraße.
